IBM announces the IBM Personal Computer, the smallest and -- with a starting price of $1,565 -- the lowest-priced IBM computer to date. An immediate success, the IBM PC quickly becomes the industry standard, and was one of the reasons Time magazine chose the "personal computer" as its 1982 Man of the Year. The PC also launches a whole industry of "IBM-compatible" clones, software and accessory equipment.

It laid the foundation for PC-compatible market, which would dominate the home computers market for the following decades. But during the 1980s, mainframes faced increasing competition from microprocessors, workstations, and super-minicomputers. To meet this challenge, IBM pushed technology to the limit to create the ES/9000 in 1991, a family of powerful mainframes with a price tag to match, from $70,500 up to $22 million. In the late 1980s, IBM decided to move hardware manufacturing to Raleigh, North Carolina, and software manufacturing to Austin, Texas. By the early 1990s, implementation of these decisions was complete – many employees were transferred to the North Carolina and Texas sites.
